Parliament’s ad hoc committee set up to hold an inquiry into the South African Broadcasting Corporation board, is expected to meet today to consider its final report.

It is expected to include recommendations for setting up an interim SABC board.

The suggestions MPs made in January included commissioning a full forensic audit into all alleged irregular and wasteful expenditure, and implementing all outstanding court orders against the SABC.

The role of Communications Minister Faith Muthambi was a point of contention between MPs on the committee.

 

Gauteng Premier David Makhura’s State of the Province address yesterday was weak because nothing new had been done during his two-and-a-half-year term, the DA said yesterday.

“Many of the so-called plans to be rolled out to reshape the economy, housing, and social services are simply reheated dreams that are two years old. Minor adjustments to these fanciful dreams have certainly not led to prosperity,” the DA’s Gauteng leader John Moodey said.

Delivering his address in Randfontein, on the West Rand, Makhura said an economic advisory panel would help the Gauteng Office of the Premier implement the province’s economic and infrastructure plans. Jabulani Moleketi, a deputy minister of finance during former President Thabo Mbeki’s administration, would chair the panel.

A civil society-led integrity promotion and anti-corruption committee would monitor maladministration, incompetence, and corruption in government departments.

 

The ANC discussed its policy documents and nothing besides this, at its special National Executive Committee meeting yesterday, ANC spokesperson Zizi Kodwa said.

According to news reports, some members of the party’s NEC were planning to call for Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan to step down.

“The NEC was specially convened to consider policy discussion documents as part of a road map towards the policy conference to be held in June.

“The NEC has adopted all the papers. They will be released to the media and for public engagement early next month,” Kodwa said.
