Nineteen victims of the Life Esidimeni disaster have still not been claimed by their relatives, Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi said yesterday.
Police began forensic investigations and efforts to identify the unclaimed bodies in September last year, he said.

He was briefing reporters in Pretoria on progress made in implementing Health Ombudsman Prof Malegapuru Makgoba’s recommendations, following his investigation into why 94 mentally-ill patients died when they were moved from the Life Esidimeni facility to several unlicensed NGOs.

Motsoaledi was accompanied by Gauteng Health MEC Gwen Ramokgopa.

The ANC yesterday repeated its call for the wearing of hard hats to be banned in Parliament.

ANC spokesperson Zizi Kodwa said in a statement that EFF MPs were using them as weapons,.

Kodwa appealed to Parliament to act "firmly and without hesitation", and protect the interests of millions of South Africans who relied on their elected representatives to advance laws and policies.

EFF spokesperson Mbuyiseni Ndlozi said if the ANC was looking for a "thug", it need only look within.

DA Chief Whip John Steenhuisen told Parliament yesterday that South Africans know President Jacob Zuma will never deliver on his State of the Nation Address promises.

The unemployed must have been disappointed by "more rhetoric, more empty promises and another year of despair," from Zuma, he said in the National Assembly during debate on the Sona.
