If elected president of South Africa, Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma will speed up service delivery, a senior KwaZulu-Natal ANC Youth League official said yesterday.

ANC Youth League provincial secretary Thanduxolo Sabelo was speaking to journalists outside the inaugural economic freedom lecture at Durban's City Hall.

He said that the youth league had nationally backed Dlamini-Zuma, chairperson of the African Union Commission, because she was "the most capable for the job".

 

Gambia's President Yahya Jammeh, who initially accepted his defeat in a December 1 election before making a dramatic about-face, will challenge the poll result before the Supreme Court, the ruling party said in a statement.

His loss to opposition candidate Adama Barrow, announced by the elections commission last week and followed by his rapid concession, had sparked hope for change in the tiny West African nation following 22 years of Jammeh's authoritarian rule.

"The statement of APRC chairperson Yahya Jammeh on the 9th December was a prelude of a petition that the APRC is in the process of filing before the Supreme Court against the flawed decision of the Independent Elections Commission," it said.

 

The Presidency announced yesterday that government was ready to compensate families of the Marikana victims.

"The SAPS has instructed its attorneys to make offers of payments in full settlement of claims for the claims where quantification were complete and were not under criminal investigation," President Jacob Zuma said in a statement.

Zuma was giving an update on steps taken by various government departments to implement Farlam Commission of Inquiry recommendations.

The compensation process was initiated after the Marikana Massacre, in which police shot 112 striking Lonmin mine workers, killing 34 of them on August 16, 2012.
