The High Court in Pretoria is expected to hear arguments from government today on reasons for wanting to withdraw from the International Criminal Court.

Representatives for President Jacob Zuma, Justice Minister Michael Masutha, the National Assembly speaker, the chair of the National Council of Provinces as well as the Department of International Relations and Co-operation are expected to address the court.

This comes a day after the DA and Southern African Litigation Centre presented arguments against government’s decision to withdraw from the ICC.

Last month the Constitutional Court dismissed the party's application for direct access to challenge the decision.

 

Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe should step down and allow other Zimbabweans to take over from him, the EFF said yesterday.

This comes as the party congratulated the people of Gambia for holding a peaceful and democratic election that saw President Yahya Jammeh conceding defeat to his opponent Adama Barrow.

Jammeh, who ruled the west African country for 22 years, accepted his defeat on Friday, following an election in which over 800 000 people voted.

 

It is time that the country’s leaders listen to South Africans and heed their cry, Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa said yesterday.

He was speaking at the third commemoration of former president Nelson Mandela’s death in Johannesburg.

He said it was not a time to display arrogance and ignore the people.

He said protesting students demanding free higher education, as well as the demands of workers fighting for better wages and communities going for days without water needed to be heeded. It was time for leaders to put people’s needs ahead of theirs, he said.
