DA to lobby MPs to support motion of no confidence against Zuma

Parliament will again debate a motion of no confidence in President Jacob Zuma, the Democratic Alliance (DA) has said.

One day after the release of the long-awaited report on “state capture”, DA leader Mmusi Maimane said the party’s motion would be debated on Thursday, November 10.

This was a provisional date, he said.

"This next week will be the moment of reckoning for our country. We have to speak out against this attack on our constitution and democracy and fire Jacob Zuma immediately. We must do this for our country and for generations to come," Maimane said.

The party would be launching a public campaign to build support for the motion. This would include lobbying all MPs, including the African National Congress, Maimane said.

"This is a South African motion, it is an opportunity for us to represent our people and speak truth to power on their behalf."

He said they could not wait for the inquiry process to be complete to get rid of Zuma.

They also could not simply do nothing just because the ruling party had numbers in Parliament, and could kill the motion.
