DA to inspect Beitbridge border post

The Democratic Alliance (DA) on Tuesday said it would conduct an oversight visit to the Beitbridge border post with Zimbabwe to investigate complaints of slow service and rising incidents of crime.

The party's home affairs spokesman Haniff Hooseen will visit the border post in Musina in Limpopo along with the DA's provincial leader on Wednesday.

"This follows reports of increasing incidences of vehicle, explosives and cigarette smuggling, distressing incidents of human trafficking and the use of fraudulent documents," the DA said.

It added that there have also been complaints of long queues due to slow service by border post staff handling the high number of travellers crossing the border. Staff have in turn complained of a lack of office space.

"The DA will also identify the challenges faced by ordinary people at the border post and map out ways in which the long queues, crime and safety, fraud, corruption and the general ill-treatment of travellers and asylum-seekers can be addressed," the party said.

The department of home affairs deployed an extra 37 officials to the border post ahead of Zimbabwe's national elections last week but travellers complained of waiting up to six hours to cross.
