DA to conduct oversight visit to Nyanga Police Station in light of reduced crime stats in the area

16th May 2022

Today, Monday 16 May 2022, DA Western Cape Interim Provincial Leader, Tertuis Simmers MPL; DA National Spokesperson and Constituency Head, Siviwe Gwarube MP; DA Shadow Minister of Police, Andrew Whitfield MP, and local councillors will be conducting an oversight visit to the Nyanga Police Station.

For years, Nyanga was considered the murder capital of South Africa until the most recent crime statistics demonstrated a drop in the murder rate in this area. This has been attributed to the work of the Western Cape provincial government, the City of Cape Town’s LEAP programme and the South African Police Service’s working relationship with local structures. This development can be a case study of how crime can be brought down in hotspot areas in the province and the country.

The delegation will be meeting with the station management and key role players to further gain an understanding of how things have changed and what resourcing the SAPS needs to capitalize on these gains, while making our communities safer.

Details of the oversight visit:

Time: 11:00

Place: Nyanga Police Station
