The DA calls on the African Union to mediate to ensure an end of bloody protests in the capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Kinshasa, which has claimed the lives of 42 people.

The days of protest due to proposed changes to electoral laws which will see a postponement of the 2016 presidential elections to benefit President Joseph Kabila is a matter that should be remedied urgently.

The AU should mediate in the conflict that has risen between the opposition and the government to end the violence and further loss of lives, and to ensure that both parties reach a consensus on the matter.

The South African government has failed to take a position at a time where peace and stability is compromised for a democratic cause. We cannot stand by and watch while democracy is being undermined for suspicious gains by any individual.
