DA: Statement by Winston Rabotapi, DA Shadow Minister of Sports and Recreation, congratulates Proteas test captain Graeme Smith for captaining a world-record 100th test match (01/02/2013)

1st February 2013

The DA congratulates Proteas test captain Graeme Smith for captaining a world-record 100th test match today.

Graeme has served his nation for well over a decade, debuting in March 2002, and has captained the Proteas since the age of 22. Last year he led the Proteas to the world number one test spot – a ranking we still hold.

Graeme’s iconic moment on the 2009 Australian tour, when he stepped out to bat despite a broken hand and injured arm, brought even Australian fans to their feet, and united the entire cricketing world in admiration for his talent, inspirational leadership and gusty determination.

Graeme exemplifies how sportsmen and women can galvanise a nation and foster a sense of togetherness through a feeling of pride in someone willing to go beyond the call of duty for their country.

The DA wishes Graeme well for his 100th test as captain and looks forward to continued success under his inspirational leadership.
