DA: Statement by Patricia Kopane, DA Leader in the Free State, on the State’s failure to secure any convictions for the murder of Andries Tatane (28/03/2013)

28th March 2013

The state’s failure to secure any convictions for the murder of Andries Tatane signals a sad day for the people of the Free State and for South Africa.

The National Prosecuting Authority’s case was such a disgrace that the judge had no choice but to let those accused of Mr Tatane’s murder go free.

The DA calls on the state to get its house in order and appeal this ruling. A proper case must be brought before higher courts.

How is it possible that no justice can be found for the family of one the most high-profile victims of police brutality in a post-Apartheid South Africa?

As a nation we all saw what happened to Andries Tatane on national television. The state can and must do more to see justice done.
