DA: Statement by Mmusi Maimane, DA National Spokesperson, asserts that DA local governments have created 31 000 jobs in the last year (01/03/2013)

1st March 2013

In the last year, DA Municipal governments have created 31 167 new temporary jobs for local communities using the expanded public works programme. These jobs provide valuable learning and training opportunities for individuals, and stimulate local economic growth.

Most of the jobs were created in community safety, recycling, road works and sidewalk regeneration projects. Where feasible, our governments contribute to job creation efforts by investing in productive and cost-effective infrastructure projects.

This list indicates how many jobs were created in each DA run municipality:

City of Cape Town:  13852

Our municipalities have also initiated special creative projects to channel funding to communities that have special needs. Many have for example initiated RDP house repair crews to assist people who have received shoddy RDP houses from national government. Other creative projects include communal sports ground maintenance crews, pest control crews, the rehabilitation of seawalls in coastal areas and sewer works.

The DA in government is utilising every tool at its disposal to create jobs, grow the economy and deliver better services to South Africans.

Where we govern, we are pushing back the frontiers of unemployment and poverty, step by step.
