The DA extends our deepest condolences to the families of the victims of Air Algerie flight AH 5017 which crashed yesterday.

We also extend our condolences to the friends, family and loved ones of all others who died in this horrific tragedy.

This comes after the flight, en route to Algeria from Burkino Faso, lost contact with air control and later crashed.

We trust that the relevant authorities will investigate the crash site and assist the families involved in order to provide some comfort during this difficult time.

The DA calls on the Civil Aviation Authority to ensure the safety of all flights in South Africa and those of South African Airways, as well as the proper functioning of all airline infrastructure in the country. We need to make sure that our airways are safe and that flights in South Africa are assured of safety in order to prevent any further incidents such as Air Algerie’s tragic crash.

We trust that the relevant authorities will do everything possible to ensure that the cause of this tragedy is unearthed and made public.
