The Constitutional Court today reserved judgment on its case in respect to motions of no-confidence. The DA is pleased by today’s proceedings and looks forward to the judgement.

Today we made our case that members of parliament have the right to move a motion of no-confidence, have it debated within a reasonable time-frame and not be subject to any form of political interference.  

In addition, it is significant to note that the Speaker of the National Assembly, Max Sisulu, now concedes that- as argued by the DA- there is indeed a lacuna in the rules of the National Assembly which can result in motions of no confidence being blocked on political grounds despite this being a constitutional right. This is contrary to the position he took in the Western Cape High Court in November 2012.

We will await the final decision of the Constitutional Court.
