The Gauteng Education Department must account for a school eviction in Tembisa which led to massive destruction of property and left pupils without learning facilities.

According to reports in the Daily Sun newspaper today, the Sunrise Combined School in Tembisa was evicted by the sheriff of the court last Thursday.

The school reportedly has papers to prove its registration and legality.

The eviction was so destructive that several hundred desks, chairs and textbooks were damaged in the process.

I will be tabling oral questions to the MEC of Education in Gauteng, Panyaza Lesufi, to establish what processes were followed in this particular case, what measures have been taken to accommodate the learners, and who will take responsibility for the destruction of property.

A lack of quality education continues to be one of South Africa’s most pressing concerns and something which keeps far too many people locked out of the economy.

We cannot allow for such a disruption to the school year for these 1000 pupils or for the destruction of quality education materials.
