DA NW: DA welcomes appointment of new NC Police Commissioner

The DA welcomes the appointment of the new Northern Cape Police Commissioner Major General Peter Shivuri.

Maj. Gen Shivuri brings with him a wealth of experience in both leadership and operational fields of policing, including being a station commander in Khayelitsha in Cape Town and deputy police commissioner here in the province.

We expect the new Provincial Commissioner to lead with integrity and be apolitical to inspire confidence in the service and the community at large.

This will ensure that police carry out their duties without fear or favour and improve their effectiveness to tackle crime head on.

Research indicates that senior police leaders play a crucial role in creating an ethical working environment, which in turn can impact on the attitudes and behaviours of officers and staff.

Challenges remain in this province and the new PC must continue where Lt Gen Basson left.

Kimberley, Galeshewe, Upington and Roodepan are still the worst precincts of reported crimes in Northern Cape.

If we are serious about ensuring freedom and fairness and ensuring safe communities as per NDP goals then right from the top we should have leaders with passion and commitment of the highest level.

DA wishes Major General Shivuri all the best in his new position.
