DA: Mlindi Nhanha says NMB coalition must put the people first

On the road to the watershed 2016 Local Government Elections, we ran on the commitment of bringing change to Nelson Mandela Bay (NMB) and to put the people first by ensuring quality service delivery, a zero-tolerance approach to corruption and the creation of much-needed job opportunities.

The proposed motion of no confidence by the UDM in coordination with the PA undermines the will of the people of NMB. Removing the DA from the mayoral seat would open the process of returning the municipality to the ANC, which was rejected by the people of NMB in 2016.

So much good work has been done since the coalition government was elected and subsequently sworn in. In the short time since the elections, we have managed to:

• Connect 12 000 residents to running water and toilets for the first time
• Create 4 000 much-needed job opportunities
• Make NMB safer by introducing a Metro Police Department
• Stop officials from flying business and first class
• Award 1 800 youth bursaries worth R34 million

These are but a few of the deliberate initiatives carried out by the DA-led coalition government.

The motion of no confidence will erase this hard work and the people of NMB will suffer.

The challenges within the coalition cannot come before the people of NMB who have placed their futures in our caring hands.

We have a lot to do on the road to 2019, where we will usher in a new beginning for South Africa, therefore we cannot afford to let politics cloud our mission of building a better and post-ANC South Africa.
