On Wednesday, 04 October 2017, DA leader, Mmusi Maimane, will deliver the Keynote Address at the Joburg Indaba. His address will unpack what a more inclusive and transformed mining industry should look like in South Africa.
South Africa has one of the richest endowments of minerals of any country in the world. Our mining industry could and should be playing a major role in uplifting the lives of poor South Africans and redressing past injustices. Instead, the mining sector is in retreat, floundering under the weight of ill considered, incoherent policy, much of it designed specifically to facilitate crony empowerment.
The mining industry must play its rightful part in fighting poverty, unemployment and inequality. It must focus on both broad-based earning and broad-based owning. Therefore, a policy approach aimed at rapidly growing the mining industry is required.
