Gauteng Education MEC, Panyaza Lesufi has told the DA that since 2014 no cases of corruption have taken place in his department and that there have been no investigations into corruption.

However, the DA is often approached by individuals working within the department, members of school governing bodies and concerned citizens who have alluded to corrupt activities taking place right under the MEC’s nose.

While MEC Lesufi admits that some individuals have been fired from the department for fraud, he does not explain if any charges were laid against these individuals and what action, if any, the department has taken to follow up.

Despite having a strategy in place to combat corruption, it is an ineffective tool if there is no political will to root out corruption or to investigate allegations made by concerned members of the public.

The DA will continue to investigate allegations of corruption, particularly when this ANC-run provincial government has lost interest.
