DA: Ian Ollis says DA invites public to comment on gazetted Strike Violence Bill

The DA has submitted a Private Members Bill to hold unions accountable for damage caused by striking union members. The bill <https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B_-slGu8-FTxNkVqcml1NU50U0E/view?usp=sharing>  has appeared in the Government Gazette yesterday, and is now officially open for public comment in the next 30 days before it will be further considered by Parliament.

I would like to invite all members of the public and interested stakeholders to submit comment on the bill. All input will be seriously considered, and will help to guide the final draft of the proposed legislation.

My aim is to pass this bill so that we can ensure orderly strikes where the rights of union members and the public are equally enforced. In recent years, strike damage has amounted to millions and many have been injured.

Members of the public can submit comments within the next 30 days to btyawa@parliament.gov.za and copy in cayleyg@da.org.za. Alternatively, comment can be mailed to the Acting Secretary to Parliament, Old Assembly Building, Parliament Street, Cape Town, PO Box 15, 8000.

The government gazette can be accessed online on the government gazette website or at public libraries across the country.

The DA looks forward to engaging with the public to put forward the best possible legislation.
