The DA has written to the Chairperson of the National Council of Provinces (NCOP), Thandi Modise, to challenge how it is that the NCOP illegally voted on a draft resolution to establish an ad hoc committee to investigate the President’s notice of intervention in the North West province.

The ANC is abusing the NCOP and Constitutional procedures to fight a political battle.

In the plenary, despite multiple points of order from members of the DA, the Presiding Officer, Hon. Tau,  ruled that the Order of the Day should still continue. The President and Inter-Ministerial task team have not provided reasons for the NCOP to consider whether they should investigate the intervention and the draft resolution is thus invalid, illegal and unconstitutional.

The dismal situation in North West requires urgent invention, however, the NCOP cannot be treated as a weapon against political enemies.

If the President is serious about removing the disgraced Premier, Supra Mahumapelo, from the ANC ranks, then he must do so of his own accord and must desist from abusing the NCOP.

The DA finds this desperate move by the President extremely concerning as this could potentially affect other provinces if the NCOP’s sanctity is compromised in this manner.

It is abundantly clear now that the President’s new dawn is riddled with outrageous decisions which set a bad precedent for this country.
