The Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) will embark on a one day protest against e-tolls and other issues affecting workers on Friday.

The Cosatu protest, which coincides with ‘International Decent Work Day’, will also press for free education.

“The Cosatu protest action of 7 October 2016 is protected in terms of Section 77 of the Labour Relations Act headed Protest action to promote or defend socioeconomic interests of workers,” the federation said in a statement.

Cosatu, which says it has more than two million members, is demanding the scrapping of the e-tolling system and the urgent implementation of safe, reliable, integrated and affordable transport.

The labour action has been sanctioned by the National Economic Development and Labour Council (Nedlac).

“Nedlac hereby confirms that the planned protest action as outlined in Cosatu’s Section 77 (1)(d) notice is protected in terms of the Labour Relations Act 66 of 1995 and in line with the Nedlac Section 77 Certificate on the State of Public Transport in South Africa,” said a letter sent to Cosatu.
