The Congress of South African Trade Unions congratulates Bafana Bafana on qualifying for the finals of the African Cup of Nations. They were the clear leaders of Group A, unbeaten in their six matches, notching up 12 points, with three wins and three draws. They scored nine goals during qualification matches while conceding only three.

While an historic win over big rivals Nigeria would have been the icing on the cake, a 2-2 draw against one of the giants of African football is still a remarkable achievement.

It is vital now to sustain the steady improvement in the national team’s performances, by continuing and improving the development of soccer at all levels - from the schools up to the NFD, PSL and SAFA - to ensure we realise our country`s full potential.

The challenge now is for Bafana Bafana to win AFCON itself in Equatorial Guinea next year. There is no reason why they should not succeed, and we can assure them that the people of South Africa will be 100% shouting for them.
