Confronting the Corrupt

Paul Hoffman

The infamous Seriti Commission into the arms deal.

The Glenister case following the disbanding of the Scorpions. Busting open the bread manufacturers' cartel.

High drama; high stakes brought to South Africa courtesy of the Accountability Now NGO and its founder, Paul Hoffman.

Join him in his journey from jaded silk to corruption buster - a fly-on-the-wall account of courtroom clashes, influential personalities, secrets and lies in the battle to speak truth to power.

Confronting the Corrupt tells of Accountability Now's biggest battles, leading to landmark decisions in jurisprudence and earning its place in the small but determined group of organisations protecting and upholding the rule of law in South Africa.

About the author

Paul Hoffman was born in 1950 in Johannesburg on the wrong side of town. His primary education was at the local Mondeor Primary School, secondary at St Martin’s School in Rosettenville and tertiary at Wits University, where he read for the BA LLB degrees while completing articles of clerkship with the legal firm Bowens.

In 1975 he relocated to Cape Town and worked for various firms of attorneys until he was called to the Cape Bar in 1980. His early published works include monthly audio tapes called Current Law Cassettes, a column on new legislation for De Rebus, the attorneys’ magazine, and a prize-winning article on the reform of pupillage for Consultus, the advocates’ magazine.

In 1995 President Nelson Mandela conferred silk (senior counsel) status on him and he served as an acting judge on the Cape Bench at the request of three successive judges president. In 2006 he left the Bar to start the Centre for Constitutional Rights and since 2009 he has been pursuing his passion for constitutionalism as one of the six directors of Accountability Now.

He still lives in Cape Town, beyond the lentil curtain in Noordhoek, where he takes his dogs on long beach walks and practices yoga while not exacting accountability.
