Formerly Upper Volta, Burkina Faso achieved independence from France in August 1960 and spent many of its post-independence years under military rule. Repeated military coups during the 1970s and 1980s were followed by multiparty elections in the early 1990s. Current President Blaise Campaore came to power in a 1987 military coup and has won every election since then. The land locked country has suffered from recurring droughts, high population density and limited natural resources that have resulted in poor economic prospects for the majority of its citizens. The country is the world's third poorest country. It has 45 provinces and its official language is French.
