Formerly the British protectorate of Bechuanaland, Botswana adopted its current name upon independence in 1966. Four decades of uninterrupted civilian leadership, progressive social policies, and significant capital investment have created one of the most dynamic economies in Africa. As one of Africa's most stable countries, and the continent's longest continuous multiparty democracy, the country is relatively free of corruption and has a good human rights record. Botswana is also the world's largest producer of diamonds, but also has one of the highest known rates of HIV/AIDS. The country consists of nine districts and five town councils, and four major languages - English (the official language), Setswana, Kalanga, and Sekgalagadi - are spoken.
