Black Feminist Womxn to hold memorial service for Mama Winnie

12th April 2018

collective of Black Feminist Womxn have come together to share space and feelings in the passing of Mam’ Winnie Mandela. We are moved and inspired by a need to honour Mam’ Nomzamo’s life and legacy, to collectively mourn her passing and to defend her memory and life, in the face of  the racism and the oppression of her as a womxn that followed her (and all of us) throughout her life and seeks to follow her in her death.

We are also encouraged to create a space for feminist womxn to celebrate Mama Winnie without being subjected to the kinds of patriarchal narratives that have been circulating in the past week.

In light of this, on Sunday the 15th April at Morris Issacson Secondary school in Central Jabavu Soweto we will hold a memorial from 1 – 4PM.

Why the day after the funeral?

The memorial will be the day after the funeral because we believe that her love for Black people will always live in and through us.

Why we chose the venue?

The school’s significance in the 1976 uprising and also it’s location in the township, where Mama’s organising was largely based and where she stayed until her last days on this earth

Who is expected to attend the memorial?

An invitation has been extended to individual Black feminist womxn and organisations. Some who will be in attendance include celebrated poet Lebo Mashile, former Fees Must Fall activists, Simamkele Dlakavu and Busisiwe Seabe; feminist organiser Kwezilomso Mbandazayo;  queer activitst Bev Ditsie and musician Msaki.
