ConCourt expected to hear application for Zuma's impeachment

The Constitutional Court will today hear an application by opposition parties for Parliament to institute impeachment proceedings against President Jacob Zuma.

The Constitutional Court in a statement said the application was brought by the Economic Freedom Fighters, the United Democratic Movement and the Congress of the People against National Assembly Speaker Baleka Mbete and Zuma for various orders directed against them.

The orders include one declaring that Mbete failed to put in place all appropriate procedures and mechanisms to hold Zuma accountable following the president's failure to implement recommendations in the former Public Protector's report into Nkandla in 2014.

Cosatu says Ramaphosa's alleged extra marital affairs is a silly non-scandal

The Congress of South African Trade Unions remains fully behind Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa in his quest to become the ANC's next president, the trade union federation said yesterday.

It dismissed Ramaphosa’s alleged extra marital affairs as “silly” and as “a matter between him and his family”.

In a statement, spokesperson Sizwe Pamla said Cosatu’s decision to endorse Ramaphosa was never based on Ramaphosa's strict moral attitude.

Kenya to hold fresh presidential elections on October 17

Kenya's electoral commission has announced that the country's new presidential elections will take place on October 17, after the country's Supreme Court overturned the result of last month's poll that declared President Uhuru Kenyatta the winner.

Chairperson of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission Wafula Chebukati confirmed the decision.

Only Kenyatta and opposition leader Raila Odinga, who brought the court challenge, would be on the ballot paper, along with their running mates.
