The Republic of Angola is one of Africa's major oil producers, and one of the world's poorest countries, with many Angolans relying on food aid. Angola is struggling to tackle the physical, social and political legacy of a 27-year civil war that ravaged the country after independence from Portugal on November 11, 1975. Angola is currently rebuilding its infrastructure, retrieving weapons from its heavily-armed civilian population and resettling tens of thousands of refugees who fled the fighting. The country consists of 18 provinces and four major languages are spoken - Portuguese (the official language), Umbundu, Kimbundu, and Kikongo. President Dos Santos held legislative elections at then end of last year (2008) and presidential elections will take place in 2010.
