ANC wins Ekurhuleni

Ekurhuleni mayor Mzwandile Masina

The African National Congress (ANC) has retained Ekurhuleni Metro on Tuesday after its mayoral candidate, Mzwandile Masina, was re-elected.

The ANC received 117 votes, making it the majority as the DA lagged behind with 106 votes. One vote was regarded as a spoilt ballot.

The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), which has 25 seats, consistently interrupted proceedings, demanding that all councillors produce identification documents during voting.

Democratic Alliance (DA) mayoral candidate Ghaleb Cachalia questioned Masina's nomination.

He asked Masina during his nomination if he was still getting payment as the deputy minister of trade and industry, to which Masina replied that he had resigned his position in the National Assembly.

Cachalia indicated he would be lodging a complaint against Masina, and should his complaint be proved legitimate, "this seating will be null and void".

Moments before, Councillor Patricia Khumalo retained her seat as speaker of council. She won with 117 votes of the 106 votes that DA councillor Shado Shabangu received.

ANC councillors cheered and sang struggle songs as Masina put on the mayoral, with supporters cheering outside.
