| ANC: Statement by Moloto Mothapo, African National Congress Chief Whip, submitting a letter of complaint to the SAHRC (12/03/2010) |
The Chief Whip of the Majority Party in Parliament, Dr. Mathole Motshekga, has today, 12 March, submitted a formal request to the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) to conduct an investigation into complaints of gross human rights violation of leaders and members of various churches and mosques in the Western Cape township of Khayelitsha by the Cape Town Metropolitan Council.
The letter of request follows a fact-finding visit to Khayelitsha on Tuesday by ANC Members of Parliament, where they witnessed shocking and callous destruction of temporary structures of churches and mosques.
In the letter, the Chief Whip requests the SAHRC to conduct an investigation into the conduct of the City of Cape Town and take appropriate corrective measures to bring relief to the affected communities.
The Office of the Chief Whip will, while the Commission is looking into the matter, continue to work together with the affected communities to ensure that this senseless onslaught on churches and mosques is urgently halted and that the black people of Khayelitsha are allowed to freely exercise their religious rights.
