African National Congress (ANC) stalwarts and veterans on Thursday expressed sadness at the passing of diplomat, one-time Cabinet Minister and constitutional expert Zola Sydney Themba Skweyiya.

Skweyiya passed away during the early hours of April 11, 2018 after a protracted illness.

The ANC stalwarts conveyed their heartfelt condolences to Skweyiya’s wife, Thuthukile Skweyiya and the entire family for their loss.

A statement said Skweyiya played a critical role in the constitutional negotiations leading up to the first democratic elections, and in the development of the country post 1994. They added that he was committed to his assigned Ministerial portfolios for the over ten years he was entrusted with the responsibility.

“He was passionate about the protection of the elderly, and held numerous outreach and engagements with older South Africans across the country. He also felt strongly about the resolution of historical injustice, and was an advocate for the policy of affirmative action,” said the ANC stalwarts.

Skweyiya was appointed as High Commissioner of South Africa to the UK and Ireland in 2009, where he advanced the interest of South Africa and Africa. On his return, he remained active in ANC veteran structures and was an outspoken advocate for the renewal and restoration of the integrity and values of the movement in the face of what many have argued were backward steps in its development in recent years.

The ANC stalwarts mourn and celebrate his life of service, excellence, and the love for his people and the movement at large.
