ANC Stalwarts and Veterans: Statement on Zola Skweyiya's passing

The ANC Stalwarts and Veterans are deeply saddened and once again mourns, the passing of ANC Stalwart Veteran, Constitutional expert, Diplomat and Leader, Cde Zola Sydney Themba Skweyiya, after a protracted illness.

Cde Zola Skweyiya passed away during the early hours on Wednesday 11 April 2018. Comrade Skweyiya passed just a few days before his birthday on 14th of April, when he would have celebrated 76 years of age.

On behalf of the ANC Stalwarts and Veterans and the entire membership of the movement, we convey our heartfelt condolences to his wife, Mrs Thuthukile Skweyiya and the entire family for their loss. We mourn with them as we celebrate the life of this gentle giant and brother of the struggle.

Cde Zola played a critical role in the constitutional negotiations, and in the development of This beautiful nation post 1994 as a member of Parliament and committed to his many assigned Ministerial portfolios for over 10 years. He was passionate about the protection of the elderly, and held numerous outreach and engagement with older South Africans across the country. He also felt strongly about the resolution of the historical injustice, and an advocate for the policy of affirmative action.

In 2009, he was appointed as High Commissioner of South Africa to the UK and Ireland, where he advanced the interest of South Africa and Africa. On his return, he remained active in veterans structures, an outspoken advocate for the renewal and restoration of the integrity and values of the movement, he served all his life.

We mourn and celebrate the life of service, excellence, and love for his people and movement at large.
