ANC fires employee nabbed for cash-heist

The Luthuli House employee arrested for alleged involvement in a cash-in-transit heist has been identified as Errol Velile Present by his employer the African National Congress (ANC), which on Wednesday said it had summarily fired him.

''The allegations for which Mr. Errol Velile Present was arrested for and the charges proffered against him are of serious nature that the organisation had to exercise rules provided for in the ANC personnel manual, terminating his service with immediate effect,'' the governing party said in a statement.

Earlier, the party confirmed reports that one of its employees, who worked at Luthuli House the party headquarters, had been arrested in connection with Soweto cash heist along with three other suspects.

Present has already appeared in court along with his accomplices. The accused allegedly attacked security guards loading cash in an ATM IN Dobsonville, Soweto two weeks ago. Police said the armed gang proceeded to bomb the ATM in order to access cash.

They were arrested within 48 hours as police raided areas around Soweto hunting for the robbers. The armed men had hijacked four vehicles, two of which were used in the robbery. The vehicles were confiscated during the arrests.

Earlier, the ANC said that a member of the party faces a disciplinary hearing in accordance with the party constitution.

Present will be ''accorded an opportunity to indicate reasons why the organisation should not immediately exercise its rights to temporarily suspend his membership of the ANC, pending the outcomes of the disciplinary proceedings,'' said the ANC.
