Anglo American Platinum’s (Amplats’) ‘Tata Madiba and I’ competition winners are in London respresenting the country at a British Council South Africa exhibition, which is set to showcase the life and times of the late freedom icon Nelson Mandela.

The eight learners from mining community schools in the country have been flown to London to attend Madiba’s 100th anniversary exhibition from 4 to 8 July 2018.

The centenary of the birth of Mandela, which will be celebrated on July 18, provides a unique opportunity for people around the world to reflect on his life and times and to promote his legacy.

The winners of the competition, which was launched on April 1, 2018, are Xiluva Mkansi, Onalenna Khunou, Thulisile Mdleleni, Litha Blayi and Keaboka Mathibe from Tshukudu High School in Rustenburg and three learners from Amplats’ Mogalakwena host communities, Khensani Maluleke of Seritarita Secondary School; Koketso Sebelebele of Makgenene High School; and Elizabeth Mothwa of Mantutule Secondary School.

Amplats head of social performance Ted Muhajir said these learners will not only represent South Africa as ambassadors during the exhibition but will further be ambassadors of their respective communities, schools and Amplats.

“This once-in-a-lifetime experience will broaden the horizons of the learners. It will also give them an insight into how Tata Madiba is viewed in other countries,” said Muhajir.
