AfriForum to submit criminal charges against Gwede Mantashe and Jesse Duarte

28th August 2014

AfriForum will this afternoon at 13:00 submit criminal charges at the Brooklyn Police Station in Pretoria against the Secretary-General and Deputy Secretary-General of the ANC, Gwede Mantashe and Jesse Duarte.

The charges flow from a series of insults which were made by Mantashe and Duarte at a media conference two days back against Public Protector, Adv Thuli Madonsela.

Article 9(1)(a), read with Article 11(1) of the Public Protector’s Act (23 of 1994) clearly stipulates that it is a crime to insult the Public Protector. Article 12(4) stipulates that any person found guilty of contravening this Act can be punished with a fine of R40 000 or a prison sentence of 12 months, or both.

Copies of the affidavit, in which the details of the charge are set out, will be provided to the media at the police station.
