AfriForum: Ian Cameron says community training is the answer to crime

In the past year, AfriForum has already trained about 1 000 South Africans to improve community safety. The Safety Team at AfriForum puts pressure on Government, but also offers safety training, as it is, according to the civil rights organisation, the solution to crime in the country.

“Where Government cannot help, we shall take care of communities and ensure that they know what to do in crisis situations,” Ian Cameron, Head of Community Safety at AfriForum, said.

AfriForum offers the following training:

·         First Aid
·         Patrolling
·         Legal aspects (When the public may or may not act)
·         Radio Communication
·         Incident Control
·         Scene Treatment
·         Response Training (Crime, medical, fire)
·         Anti-rape Training for ladies
·         Self-defence

“We can prepare communities with these different modules, and we can teach them when to act and when to rather hold back. It means that criminals get caught more often, as community members are better informed about legal aspects and how to approach crime. It reinforces the hand of the SAPS,” Cameron concluded.
