AfriForum launched phase two of its provincial Operation of Crime Free campaign on 27 and 28 May. AfriForum’s Neighbourhood Watch structures – in collaboration with the South African Police Service (SAPS), several security companies and community policing forums (CPF) – participated in this nationwide patrol.

According to Ian Cameron, AfriForum’s head of community safety, the patrol intended to raise awareness among communities across South Africa about existing and effective security structures and to prevent crime. About 124 security structures across South Africa participated in the patrol in various towns, during which 2 800 people did more than 7 000 hours of work. Cameron also said that 850 vehicles were used to carry out the patrol.

Several crimes were reported and handled during the nationwide patrol. “When communities assume responsibility in actions such as these, crime figures will decline for certain,” Cameron concluded.
