Outgoing Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, Africa’s first ever female President, is to be expelled from her party for failing to support its candidate in a recent presidential election, the Associated Press reported.

Unity party spokesperson Mohammed Ali said on Sunday Sirleaf had violated the party’s constitution by not supporting its Vice President Joseph Boakai, who served as Sirleaf’s deputy in government for 12 years, in the vote, won by former international soccer star George Weah.

Ali said Sirleaf had been seen campaigning with Weah and that Boakai supported the decision to expel her.

Sirleaf’s press secretary Jerolinmek Piah and Information Minister Eugene Nagbe told the media that a reaction from the incumbent president was expected soon.
