A R5 billion Solar Power Plant to be launch in the Northern Cape

The Minister of Trade and Industry, Dr Rob Davies together with his Saudi counterpart, Dr Twafeeq Al Rabeeach will launch the R5 billion Bokpoort Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) plant in Groblershoop, outside Upington, in the Northern Cape. Members of the media are invited to cover the event:

The Bokpoort CSP Project is one of the flagship concentrated solar thermal projects in South Africa, and is set to become a Solar Concentrated Solar Plant (CSP) with the largest level of thermal storage (c. 9,3 Hours) in the world when completed. The plant forms part of South Africa’s Renewable Energy Independent Power Producers Procurement Program (REIPPP)

Premier of the Northern, Cape Ms. Sylvia Elizabeth Lucas; Members of Executive Council, and Mayors will attend the launch.

On May 9, 2013, a consortium led by Saudi Arabia’s International Company for Water and Power Projects (“ACWA Power”) signed the Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) to supply Eskom with power and an Implementation Agreement with the Government of South Africa. The EPC Consortium was given full notice to proceed on June 25, 2013 launching the construction of this flagship solar project.
