APPOINTMENTS OF HEADS OF DIPLOMATIC MISSIONS

The Director General of the Department of Foreign Affairs, Mr Sipho Pityana is pleased to announce that President Thabo Mbeki has made the following appointments as heads of South African Diplomatic Missions abroad:

Mr NMNJ Mosia Havana, Cuba
Post level: Director

Mr. Mosia was born on 6 December 1943 in Johannesburg. He is single. He obtained a BA (Hons) specializing in French, Portuguese and Russian. He completed Diplomatic Training in South Africa as well as abroad. He joined the Department of Foreign Affairs on 1 August 1994. He served as Ambassador to Senegal (1996-1999) and as Minister in Paris from November 1995 to November 1996. He was awarded the Order of the Lion by the President of Senegal, HE Mr A Diouf, for meritorious service in Senegal. At Head Office he performed duties as Head of the Sub-Directorate for Conflict Resolution and Immigration in the Multilateral Branch and is presently the Director : Latin America.

Dr Kirsten Rajoo Chicago (CG), USA
Post level: Deputy-Director

Dr Rajoo was born on 4 February 1940 in Durban. He is married with two daughters. Dr Rajoo matriculated in Durban in 1960 and after completing a teacher's diploma in 1962, he went on to pursue academic studies at universities in Canada and the United States of America, culminating in a Ph.D. at the Pacific Western University in 1988. Dr Rajoo has been a teacher and a businessman in both Canada and South Africa and also became a Councilor in the Durban City Council. He is a Member of Parliament and has on several occasions served as Presiding Officer in the absence of the Speaker or Deputy Speaker of the National Parliament.

Ms Teresa Solomon Dar-Es-Salaam, Tanzania

Ms Solomon was born on 5 August 1945 in Cape Town. She is married with one daughter. She worked in the private sector for 10 years, 8 of these as Personnel Manager with Boots, a British Pharmaceutical firm. Since 1975 she was active in various Women's Organizations. In 1980 she served on the Executive of the United Women's Organization. She also worked as a field worker for the SA Council of Churches Dependence Conference. During the period 1983 - 1989 she was amongst other things Chairperson and Secretary of the Mitchell's Plain Co-ordinating Committee. In 1995 she was Deputy Mayor of the City of Cape Town and became Mayor in 1996, a position she vacated in 1999.

Dr Mzolisi Mabude Tehran, Iran

Dr Mabude was born on 22 July 1949. He is married. He obtained a BA degree in 1961, a post -graduate Diploma (Stockholm) 1973-74 in Political Science, a Master degree in Social Science 1976 -77 (UPPSALA) and a PhD Kandidat in Political Science. He taught at Mbabane Central School in Swaziland from 1962 - 1965, at St Anthony's Grammar School in Nigeria 1967 - 1970 and at Gaskaya College, Lagos from 1970 -1971. He was a lecturer at the University of Transkei in the Department of Political Studies from 1979 to April 1994, when he was elected to the Eastern Cape Provincial Legislature until June 1999.

Mr Curtis E Nkondo Windhoek, Namibia

Mr Nkondo was born on 1 February 1928 in Louis Trichardt. He is married with 3 sons and 2 legally adopted grandchildren. Mr Nkondo completed the Higher Teachers Diploma in1952 and was a high school teacher for 20 years and Headmaster at Lamula High School in Meadowlands. He was elected chairperson of the Soweto Teachers Action Committee and subsequently suspended from teaching. In 1985 he was elected chairperson of the Release Mandela Campaign and also became President of the National Education Union of SA. In 1983 Mr Nkondo was elected as Vise-President of the UDF in Cape Town. After the elections in 1994 Mr Nkondo became a member of the Gauteng Provincial Legislator and served on various trusts such as the Association against Woman and Child abuse and the Etwatwa Community Trust. He is currently serving on trusts and committees such as The Soweto Education Coordinating Committee, the English Language Teaching Information Centre and the Provincial Disciplinary Committee of the ANC.
