The Investigating Team of the Commission investigated 43 other cases involving violence which occurred in and around the districts of Odi, Moretele, Lehurutse, Thaba Nchu and Soshanguve. During the investigation it was found that the deaths of 31 deceased were mainly of a criminal nature, two deceased committed suicide, the deaths of three deceased were due to road traffic accidents, the death of one deceased occurred when he accidentally overturned a pot of boiling water onto himself, the deaths of two deceased were caused when their huts/shanties burnt down and one person died of natural causes. The names of the deceased and the reasons why they do not fall within the Terms of Reference of the Commission are the following:
Johannes Baloyi, Tsonga, an adult, male, aged 26 years, of stand 1159 Ramotse, Moretele, was shot and killed during an attack on his home at A9009 Marokolong Position 9, Moretele on Saturday night, 19 March 1994. Two unknown men attacked his home, shooting with rifles. After the attack the deceased was found dead in the doorway. At a post-mortem examination the cause of the death was determined as "Gunshot wound to the skull". Two persons were prosecuted and convicted of murder, robbery and illegal possession of a fireman.
This case was dealt with by a Court of Law.
Paul Modise Bopalamo, Tswana, an adult, male, aged 30 years, of 2321 Motsatsi Street, Tlhabane, Rustenburg was shot and killed on 28 March 1994 at a shebeen in Mabopane. At a post-mortem examination the cause of death was determined as "Gunshot wound to the chest, lungs, heart and aorta with bleeding into chest cavity". This case both in time and in respect of the circumstances falls outside the Commission's Terms of Reference.
Paulus Phiri Chauke, Tsonga, an adult, male, aged 53 years, of Makapaanstadt-Chief Makapaan, Moretele District was shot and killed on Saturday, 2 April 1994 in Mandu Section, Makapaanstadt. At a post-mortem examination the cause of death was determined as "Due to hypovolaemic shock from effects of gunshot wound to left arm". One Jonas Mashingo was prosecuted in case no. CC 37/95 at Odi and convicted on 21 June 1994 of Culpable Homicide and sentenced to a fine of R3 000 or 2 years imprisonment. According to the evidence the accused shot the deceased after an altercation.
This case was dealt with by a Court of Law.
Phuti Dominic Cholo, an adult, male, aged 35 years, of 669 K, Soshanguve was seen outside the home of Albertina Ndamase at about 07:00 on Tuesday, 8 March 1994 with two young men. They spoke to him and at a certain stage one of them pointed a fire-arm at him and shot him. They then took his motorcar, an Opel Kadet. The deceased was transported to Clinic III, Soshanguve where he was certified dead. The Magistrate of Soshanguve held Inquest No. 62/96 on 28 February 1997 into this matter and found that:
"(a) the identity of the deceased is Phuti Dominic Cholo.
(b) the date of death is 9 March 1994.
(c) the cause of death is 'Skietwond in die maag nadat oorledene met 'n vuurwapen geskiet was'.
(d) that death was brought about by an act as omission prima facie involving or amounting to an offence on the part of 'n onbekende persoon of persone'."
This case was dealt with by a Court of Law.
Emmerencia Hlatswayo, Tswana, a female child, aged 12 years, of Ga-Rankuwa died in a road traffic accident. The Magistrate of Odi held Inquest No. 21 1/94 on 22 August 1994 into this matter and found that:
"(a) the name of the deceased is Emmerencia Hlatswayo.
(b) the date of death is 11 March 1994.
(c) the cause of death is 'Multiple injuries consistent with road traffic accident'.
(d) that death was not brought about by any act or omission involving or amounting to an offence on the part of any person."
This case was dealt with by a Court of Law.
Abednico Kedibone, an adult, male, of 1014 Moroko, Thaba Nchu committed suicide on 11 March 1994 by stabbing himself with the same knife he used to kill his girlfriend.
Phillip Matlotleng Kekana, Tswana, an adult, male, aged 26 years, of 1613 Zone A, Mabopane was shot and killed on 13 March 1994 at Block "L", Soshanguve by Constable T A Lekgothoane of the Internal Stability Unit, Alberton, during an altercation. At a post-mortem examination the cause of the death was determined as "Bullet wound to the chest and blood loss". Constable Lekgothoane subsequently committed suicide.
Moleseng Ananias, Khoza, an adult, male, aged 23 years, died in a road traffic accident. The Magistrate of Moretele held Inquest No. 72/96 on 10 December 1996 into this matter and found that:
"(a) the identity of the deceased is Molesang Ananias Khoza.
(b) the date of death is 11 March 1994.
(c) the cause of death is 'Multiple Injuries'.
(d) that death was brought about by an act or omission prima facie involving or amounting to an offense on the part of AS in a motor vehicle accident."
This case was dealt with by a Court of Law.
Sipho Stanley Lebese, Tsonga, an adult, male, aged 33 years, of 101 Block M, Soshanguve was shot and killed on 21 March 1994 at about 21:00 while travelling in a Nissan one-ton vehicle near the circle of Block B to Block S. Mabopane. His vehicle was followed and stopped by a white bakkie whereafter the deceased was shot by the occupant(s) of the white bakkie whilst he was still sitting in his vehicle. At a post-mortem examination the cause of death was determined as "Multiple gunshot wounds to the chest with ruptured organs and bleeding into the chest cavity". No suspect has been traced to date. The date of the occurrence takes it outside the Commission's Terms of Reference.
George Makwarela Legotlo, an adult, male, aged 32 years, of 1728 Unit 8, Ga-Rankuwa was shot on 21 March 1994 in an incident unrelated to the unrest in Bophuthatswana at the time and died on 24 March 1994 in the Ga-Rankuwa Hospital. At a post-mortem examination the cause of death was determined as "Gunshot wound to the neck".
Rosinah Mabena Ndebele, an adult, female, aged 26 years, of 244 Elcangala, Block A died on 16 March 1994 at Temba after she was assaulted by her boyfriend. At a post-mortem examination the cause of death was determined as "Head injury fractured skull due to assault with a heavy blunt object".
Frans Mabetwa, N Sotho, an adult, male, aged 19 years, of 1340 Malepa Stand, Winterveldt was shot on 30 March 1994 at Plot 1435 Khubeka Stand Winterveldt. He died immediately. At a post-mortem examination the cause of death was determined as "Gunshot wounds". The case is not related to the violence of 7 -12 March 1994 in the former Bophuthatswana.
Titus Mahlalela, Zulu, an adult male, aged 45 years, 2477 Orlando West was shot and killed at 1552 Lempe Plot, Winterveldt when his tuckshop was robbed by four unknown men. The Magistrate of Odiheld Inquest No. 62/96 on 15 August 1996
into this matter and found that:
"(a) the identity of the deceased is Titus Mzikuboya Mahlela.
(b) the date of death is 31 March 1994.
(c) the cause of death is 'Due to brain damage from effects of gunshot wound to the head'.
(d) that death was not brought about by an act as omission prima facie involving or amounting to an offense: 'Yes, deceased was allegedly shot by unknown persons'."
This case was dealt with by a Court of Law.
Master Moan Mahlangu, an adult, male, aged 46 years, of 102 Block W. Soshanguve died when his shanty caught fire and he was burned to death ("charred"). On 15 November 1994 the Magistrate of Soshanguve held Inquest No 1 12/94 into this matter and found that:
"(a) the identity of the deceased is Master Moan Mhlanga, man 46 jaar, werkloos.
(b) the date of death is 13 March 1994.
(c) the cause of death is 'erge brandwonde'.
(d) that death was not brought about by any act or omission involving or amounting to an offense on the part of any person."
This case was dealt with by a Court of Law.
Shimane David Makgamatho, an adult, male, aged 34 years, of 581 Block X, Mabopane was shot on Saturday, 12 March 1994 at Zone 2, Ga-Rankuwa when his vehicle was taken by unknown persons armed with firearms. The deceased was transported to the Ga-Rankuwa Hospital where he died on Sunday, 13 March 1994. At a post-mortem examination the cause of death was determined as "a bullet wound of the abdomen". This case of hijacking falls outside the Commission's Terms of Reference.
James Hlangeni Makhubela, an adult, male, aged 42 years, of 633 Block W. Soshanguve and others were abducted on Sunday, 13 March 1994 at about 01:30 by persons who professed to be policemen. Thereafter they were taken to Kalkband where they were assaulted and threatened in order to reveal particulars of cattle thieves. During the assault the deceased died. At a post-mortem examination the cause of dead was determined as "Head injury and extensive soft tissue injury".
This case is being dealt with by a Court of Law in Odi Inquest No. 82/97.
Isaac Matome Makwela, an adult, male, aged 28 years, of Thema Stand, Winterveldt and others travelled with Johannes Phillip Mmethi in his car on 12 March 1994 at about 20:30 to Phillip's Shebeen in the Winterveld. There they alighted from the car. While they were there a number of shots were fired which struck the deceased and Mmethi. Lucky Sibanyoni rushed with them to Clinic III Soshanguve where both died the same night. At a post-mortem examination the cause of death was determined as "Gunshot wound to the stomach and aorta". One Jappie Duwee will be prosecuted in this case.
This case is being dealt with by a Court of Law.
Boy Elvis Matana, Tsonga, an adult, male, aged 37 years, of 1647 Sibayoni Stand, Winterveldt was shot and killed by one Mbuti Mvubu on 27 March 1994 in the Winterveldt. At a post-mortem examination the cause of death was determined as "Gunshot wounds to the head". According to Mbuti Mvubu he was travelling alone in a white minibus when he was stopped and confronted by four people. He shot at them in self-defence and wounded one and killed another. Mbuti Mvubu was prosecuted in case no. E 220/94 in the Magistrates' Court at Odi and found not guilty and discharged on 25 January 1996.

Rasmond Mfana Matombuti, N Sotho, an adult, male, aged 30 years, of Stand 313, Klipgat was shot and killed on Monday, 7 March 1994 at a shebeen in Klipgat after an altercation. At a post-mortem examination the cause of death was determined as "Gunshot wound to the chest". One Voster Rube was charged and convicted of the murder of the deceased at Odi in case no. H 241/95 on 29 January 1996 and sentenced to 8 years imprisonment for the murder.

Mothoka Disky Mathole, an adult, male, aged 26 years, of P O Box 218, Lenyenye was shot and killed on 21 March 1994 at Soshanguve in an incident unrelated to the unrest and uprising of 11 March 1994 in the former Bophuthatswana. At a post-mortem examination the cause of death was determined as "Gunshot wound to the head".
Motsepe Ernest Matseke, an adult, male, aged 65 years, of 3817 Block B. Mabopane was seen outside his home at 3817 Block B. Mabopane on the night of 9 March 1994 with two boys. It seemed that they had an argument. A shot was heard and ~e deceased was found lying next to his car. The deceased was taken to hospital where he died the following morning. A suspect, Daniel Thema, was arrested but the charges were withdrawn against him by the Attorney-General due to the lack of evidence. The Magistrate of Odi held Inquest No. 23/95 on 9 February 1995 into this matter and found that:
"(a) the identity of the deceased is Motsepe Ernest Matseke.
(b) the date of death is 10 March 1994.
(c) the cause of death is 'a bullet wound to the head'.
(d) that death was brought about by an act as omission prima facie involving or amounting to an offense as the 'deceased was allegedly shot by unknown persons'."
This case was dealt with by a Court of Law.
Johannes Phillip Mmethi, N Sotho, an adult, male, aged 29 years, of 1213 F West, Soshanguve and others travelled with his car on 12 March 1994 at about 20:30 to Phillip's Shebeen at Robert Pelego Stand, Winterveldt. There they alighted from the car. While they were there a number of shots were fired which struck the deceased and Isaac Matome Makwela. Lucky Sibanyoni rushed with them to Clinic III, Soshanguve where both died the same night. At a post-mortem examination the cause of death was determined as "Gunshot wound to the head". One Jappie Duwee will be prosecuted in this case. (See Case C16 supra).
This case is being dealt with by a Court of Law.
Mashupa Andries Mogashoa, N Sotho, an adult, male, aged 30 years, of 957 Block M, Soshanguve, a policeman, was shot and killed in his Combi at Vuka Motors, Makgamatho Fourway, Winterveldt on 29 March 1994 at about 22:15. At a post-mortem examination the cause of death was determined as "Multiple gunshot wounds (15) through the chest, lungs and heart with bleeding into the chest cavity". The culprit has not yet been traced. The date of the occurrence takes it outside the Commission's Terms of Reference.
Monica Nkwadipo Molebatsi, an adult, female, aged 35 years, of 1014 Moroko, Thaba Nchu was assaulted and stabbed to death by her boyfriend Abednico Kedibone who later committed suicide. (See Case C6 supra).
David Tshegofatso Molepo, an adult, male, aged 31 years, of 1614 Polonia, Ga-Rankuwa was found dead in his bedroom and it is suspected that he committed suicide by hanging himself. The Magistrate of Odi held Inquest No. 241/94 on 14 October 1994 into this matter and found that:
"(a) the identity of the deceased is David Molepo.
(b) the date of death is 10 March 1994.
(c) the cause of death is 'asphyxia due to hanging'.
(d) that death was not brought about by an act or omission involving or amounting to an offence on the part of any person."
This case was dealt with by a Court of Law.
Daniel Momane Motema, an adult, male, aged 24 years, of 268 Ramogodi, c/o Chief Motsepe, and one Batiki Isaac Sithole (case C60) were abducted on 22 March 1994 by a so-called taxi private squad. On 23 March 1994 at about 1 1:00 shots were heard near Mathipa Stand. Then a White E20 Combi drove from the scene. Upon investigation the bodies of the two deceased were found on the scene. Their bodies were burning with a tyre also burning on the bodies. Both were dead. At a post-mortem examination the cause of death was determined as "Gunshot wounds to the heart, chest and lungs with bleeding into chest cavity and post-mortem burning".
Modumetse Lucase Mothupi, an adult, male, aged 23 years, of Dinokana Village was walking on 11 March 1994 along the Lobatsi-Zeerust road when he was struck down by a truck driving at a high speed. He subsequently died. The Magistrate of Lehurutshe held Inquest No 31/94 into this matter and found that:
"(a) the identity of the deceased is Modumetse Lucase Mothupi.
(b) the date of death is 11 March 1994.
(c) the cause of death is a 'Fracture cervical spine, crush influx chest and skull'.
(d) that death was brought about by an act or omission prima facie involving or amounting to an offence in that the deceased was killed in a 'hit and run motor vehicle' accident by an unknown person."
This case was dealt with by a Court of Law.
Elias Joseph Ngobeni, Tsonga, an adult, male, aged 48 years, of Vuma Stand, Winterveldt was stabbed with a knife on 11 March 1994 by an unknown person of Thema Stand 1597, Winterveldt. The case is still under investigation to trace the culprit. The case is unrelated to the violence of 7-11 March 1994 during the uprising in Bophuthatswana. The Magistrate of Odi held Inquest No. 71/97 on 20 June 1997 in this matter and found that:
"(a) the identity of the deceased is Elias John Ngobeni.
(b) the date of death is 1 1 March 1994.
(c) the cause of death is 'Stab wound to the left chest and heart'.
(d) that 'no person liable for death'."
This case was dealt with by a Court of Law.
Daniel Pulane Nkadimeng, an adult, male, aged 23 years, of 96 Zone 1, Ga-Rankuwa was shot and killed on 12 March 1994 at Ga-Rankuwa. At a post-mortem examination the cause of death was determined as "Gunshot wound to the chest". One Gerald Seabela was prosecuted in case no. CC 51/95 at Odi and convicted on 13 November 1995 of Culpable Homicide and sentenced to R6 000 or 2 years imprisonment and a further 3 years imprisonment suspended for 5 years on certain conditions. According to the evidence the accused suspected that the deceased had stolen a Toyota Hilux bakkie belonging to the uncle of the accused. The accused confronted the deceased and during a skirmish shot the deceased.
This case was dealt with by a Court of Law.
Sebutana Joseph Ramakoka, an adult, male, aged 70 years, of Jericho Village was burnt on 21 February 1994 when he overturned a pot of boiling water over himself. He was admitted to hospital where he was treated and died on 1 1 March 1994. The Magistrate of Odi held Inquest No. 9/95 on 18 January 1995 into this matter and found that:
"(a) the identity of the deceased is Sebutana Joseph Ramakoka.
(b) the date of death is 11 March 1994.
(c) the cause of death is 'Bronchopneumonia and burns'.
(d) that death was not brought about by an act as omission prima facie
involving or amounting to an offence on the part of anyone."
This case was dealt win by a Court of Law.
Nozici Gladys Rapoo, a female child, aged 17 years, of Temba, District Moretele died after an assault. The Magistrate of Moretele held Inquest No. 43/96 on 6 November 1996 into this matter and found that:
"(a) the identity of the deceased is Nozici Gladys Rapoo.
(b) the date of death is 11 March 1994.
(c) the cause of death is 'Head Injury'.
(d) that a person identified in the case was liable for the death of the deceased."
The case was referred to the Attorney-General for such action as he may deem fit.
This case was dealt with by a Court of Law.
Johannes Rasenyalo, an adult, male, aged 30 years, 1404 Block U. Mabopane was shot and wounded during a robbery of a bakkie, a Nissan One-Ton vehicle, in which he travelled on 9 March 1994 at Block U. Mabopane. He died the following day of his injuries. The Magistrate of Odi held Inquest No. 22/95 on 9 February 1995 and found that:
"(a) the identity of the deceased is Johannes Rasenyalo, male, 30 years.
(b) the date of death is 10 March 1994.
(c) the cause of his death is 'Gunshot wound of right thigh complicated by hypovolaemic shock (severe bleeding)'."
(d) whether the death was brought about by any act or omission prima facie involving or amounting to an offense on the part of any person the Magistrate found "Yes, deceased was allegedly shot by unknown persons".
This case was dealt with by a Court of Law.
Johannes Mmagabu Senga, N Sotho, an adult, male, aged 40 years, c/o Chief Motsepe, Mmakeu, District Odi was killed on 28 March 1994 when the hut he lived in took fire and burned down. No foul play is suspected. At a post-mortem examination the cause of death was determined as "Severe burns - charred". The date of the occurrence takes it outside the Commission's Terms of Reference.
Piet Sibanda (Vibanda), Tswana, an adult, male, aged 76 years, of Lekgema Stadt, Madidi died on 14 March 1994 of natural causes and was found in the veld. No person is liable for the death of the deceased and no crime is suspected. At a post-mortem examination the cause of death was determined as "Natural Causes".
Lobisa Mveselwa Sindane, an adult, female, aged 25 years, of 1648 Molema Stand, Winterveldt was shot on 11 March 1994 at about 17:50 at the Rosetree Bottle Store, Block BB, Shoshanguve during a robbery at a bottle store. She died on 12 March 1994 at Ga-Rankuwa hospital. At a post-mortem examination the cause of death was determined as "A bullet wound of the neck". Death was brought about by an act prima facie involving an offence on the part of unknown persons. Inquest no. 97/95 (Shoshanguve) was held on 18 July 1995.
This case was dealt with by a Court of Law.
Butiki Isaac Sithole, an adult, male, aged 34 years, of 492 Tweefontein, "D", Kwa-Ndebele and Daniel Mamene Motema (Case C24) were abducted on 22 March 1994 by a so-called taxi private squad. On 32 March 1994 at about 11:00 shots were heard near Mathipa Stand. Then a white E20 Combi drove from the scene. Their bodies were burning with a tyre also burning on the bodies. Both were dead. At a post-mortem examination the cause of death was determined as "Gunshot wounds to the neck, trachea and cervical spine with post-mortem burning, inhaled blood". (See Case C26 supra).
Elias Sithole, Shangaan, an adult, male, aged 31 years, of 1483 Nakedi Stand, Winterveldt was shot and killed by one Jan Tefo on 12 March 1994. On the particular day the deceased gave Jan Tefo, a security guard who was armed with a fire-arm, a lip with his Toyota bakkie. During the trip they had an argument and Jan Tefo shot the deceased. At a post-mortem examination the cause of death was determined as "Gunshot wound to the head". Jan Tefo has disappeared and cannot be traced. A warrant for his arrest on a charge of murder was issued.
Jan Thabo Sithole, an adult, male, aged 23 years, of 410 GG, Soshanguve was shot and killed on Wednesday, 9 March 1994 when he tried to rob a security guard at BOP Distributors of his service revolver. At a post-mortem examination the cause of death was determined as "Gunshot wound to the head".
Timothy Thotela, an adult, male, aged 27 years, of Thaba Nchu, a police officer was shot during the hijack of his Combi on 22 March 1994. The Magistrate of Thaba Nchu held Inquest No. 09/97 on 18 March 1997 into this matter and found that:
"(a) the identity of the deceased is Timothy Thotela, 27 years, male.
(b) the date of death is 22 March 1994.
(c) the cause of death is 'Penetrating bullet wound. Chest with lacerations. Both lungs and bilateral haemothorax'.
(d) death was brought about by an act prima facie involving or amounting to an offense on the part of a person or persons unknown."
This case was dealt with by a Court of Law.
An unknown adult male known as Mzwakhe allegedly from the Transkei was allegedly assaulted on 12 March 1994 in an erf belonging to one Florence Hlongwane. The victim died. The Magistrate of Odi held Inquest No. 147/95 on 5 September 1995 into this matter and found that:
"(a) the identity of the deceased is unknown.
(b) the date of death is not known.
(c) the cause of death is 'Head Injury and extensive soft tissue injuries due
to blunt trauma'.
(d) the death was not brought about by any act or omission involving or
amounting to an offence on the part of any person.
This case was dealt with by a Court of Law.
Unknown male. The Magistrate of Moretele held Inquest No. 13/95 on 9 February 1995 into this matter and found that:
"(a) the identity of the deceased is unknown.
(b) the date of death is 25 March 1994.
(c) the cause of death is 'Asphyxia due to hanging'.
(d) nobody could be held responsible for the death of the deceased."
This case was dealt with by a Court of Law.
Vusimose Joseph Vilakazi, Swazi, an adult, male, aged 47 years, of 401 Block B. Mabopane was shot and killed on 28 March 1994 in Block B. Mabopane. The case is unrelated to the violence of 11 March 1994 in the former Bophuthatswana. At a post-mortem examination the cause of death was determined as "Gunshot wounds to the chest and lung with bleeding into chest cavity".
Amos Zulu, an adult, male, aged 33 years, of Loate was assaulted on 13 March 1994 at Loate by unknown persons and his body found on 14 March 1994 in Loate. The Magistrate of Odi held Inquest No. 143/95 on 7 August 1995 into the matter and found that:
"(a) the identity of the deceased is Amos Zulu.
(b) the date of death is 13 March 1994.
(c) the cause of death is 'Head injury with soft tissue injuries consistent with blunt trauma'.
(d) death was brought about by an act(s) involving or amounting to an offense in that deceased was allegedly assaulted by unknown persons."
