Zimbabwe police Monday arrested a prominent opposition lawmaker, the fourth to be held in three days, the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) said in a statement.

Reasons for Trudy Stevenson's arrest were unclear but the MDC said it suspected she was arrested after she and other activists "submitted a petition to the Namibian High Commission" ahead of Zimbabwe-Namibia's World Cup cricket fixture.

Stevenson's arrest follows the arrests of MDC lawmakers Gabriel Chaibva, Tendai Biti and Paul Madzore on Saturday.

Eight opposition lawmakers have been arrested so far this year.

The MDC claims the government has launched a systematic programme of repression against its members.
