A Western Cape winery has launched the world’s first Sulphite-free white wine, made using Honeybush and Rooibos chips.

Economic Opportunities Minister, Alan Winde, joined Audacia director Trevor Strydom and wine-maker Neil Patterson for the launch of the pioneering new wine this morning.

Speaking at the launch, Strydom explained that sulphur was commonly used as a preservative in wine. Some people, however, were allergic to sulphur.

“The antioxidant-rich indigenous Rooibos and Honeybush wood chips we use in our wine making process removes the need to preserve wine by adding sulphur,” said Strydom.

Audacia is in the process of patenting the method in over 80 countries across the world.

The company is also conducting trials on ‘low kilojoules, low alcohol’ wines.

Traditionally when lowering the alcohol level in wines, more sugar is added which changes the taste of the wine.

Audacia is seeking to produce a low sugar, low alcohol wine without compromising the taste.

“South Africa will produce a healthier option, in terms of low alcohol and low sugar wines,” said Strydom.

Minister Winde said the products were a boost for the province’s agri-processing sector, specifically in the wine industry.

“In the Western Cape, 167 494 residents are employed in the wine industry. Close to R20 billion (53%) of the wine industry’s contribution to national Gross Domestic Product is generated in the province.

“In addition, Project Khulisa has identified agri-processing as a key growth sector, with the potential to add up to a further 100 000 jobs to the local economy over the next five years. To do so, we will work to increase the value of wine exports in key strategic markets.  Products like Audacia’s Rooibos and Honeybush wooded wines give us a greater market share and cements our brand as highly innovative.”

Strydom further announced plans to share the ground-breaking technology with local companies through a licencing process.

Minister Winde added that the Western Cape Government has set its sights on creating an enabling environment for all entrepreneurs.

“We will assess how we can support entrepreneurs with the patenting process. Further, we will continue our efforts to eradicate unnecessary red tape so entrepreneurs like Trevor have the environment they need to grow their businesses and create jobs.”
