An extensive digital skills course, backed by Google, is on offer to young people in Cape Town aiming to get the training they need to start their tech careers.

Alan Winde, Minister of Economic Opportunities, encouraged young people in the city to apply for the DigifyPRO three month course, which is open to 18-30 year olds living in Cape Town and Johannesburg.

The course forms part of Digify Africa, a Livity Africa initiative. DigifyPRO is backed by Google and the Interactive Advertising Bureau. The three-month course will offer training in digital marketing, social media and content creation.

It also incorporates key Google modules including Search, AdWords, YouTube and Analytics. Trainees will work closely with brands, industry insiders and agencies to develop campaigns for live briefs.

Minister Winde said the Western Cape Government supported a range of initiatives to improve digital literacy.

“We are investing over R2 billion to connect residents to broadband. This year, we have rolled 50 out Wi-Fi hotspots through our partnership with Neotel. To bolster usage of our Wi-Fi hotspots, we introduced an Internet Champion Programme in partnership with Computers4Kids. Through this programme, we are training “Internet Champions”, sourced from communities, to deliver a digital literacy programme to the citizens at our hotspots. This is to ensure that the maximum number of residents sign up, and that they make the most of the service.”
