Negotiations on a free trade agreement between Southern African nations and the United States are continuing apace, and have not been affected by the war in Iraq, President Thabo Mbeki said on Wednesday.

Replying to questions in the National Assembly, he said members of the Southern African Customs Union (Sacu) were treating the talks "very seriously".

"The processes are on course with regards to those negotiations, and obviously we would want to see a speedy as possible conclusion."

The nature of such negotiations were never easy, but Sacu and the US were pursuing the process seriously.

"Fortunately, even despite the war in Iraq, that doesn't seem to have impacted on those particular processes," Mbeki said.

Sacu is made up of South Africa, Botswana, Namibia, Swaziland and Lesotho - Sapa
