The leadership of the United National Transport Union (UNTU) led by Wyndham Evans, President of the Union, met with Dr Popo Molefe, Chairman of the Board of Transnet, and a senior delegation yesterday to discuss the Unions concerns over the lack of communication about the state of Transnet.
 
Dr Molefe apologised for not responding to the Union’s request for a meeting sooner. He gave the Leadership of the Union a broad overview of what the newly appointed Board of Transnet has done to date and their reasons therefore.
 
He also indicated the seriousness of the challenges faced by Transnet and assured the Union that the Board only has the best interest of Transnet as one of South Africa’s crucial state-owned enterprises at heart and ultimately the best interest of each employee working for Transnet.
 
UNTU represents the majority of employees at Transnet.
 
The parties agreed that they both wanted stability and high level of productivity at Transnet and that the current turmoil within the Company is not conducive in improving the moral of the employees.
 
Steve Harris, General Secretary of UNTU, assured Dr Molefe that UNTU will continue to put the best interest of our members first in all the areas where the Union is represented. “It is in the interest of UNTU’s members and their future job security and growth that Transnet and the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (Prasa) are managed into successful, progressive and profitable state owned-enterprises.”
 
The parties agreed to meet quarterly so that the Leadership of the Union can be updated on the progress of the various action plans and disciplinary hearings underway so that our members are kept informed.
