Sibanye Gold’s recently acquired Cook 4 Operation has been making substantial losses for an extended period of time.

Uasa is participating in the Section 189 process and is at present consulting with Sibanye on measures to minimise redundancies as prescribed by the Labour Relations Act.

As the process is in its early stages, it is as yet unknown how many Uasa members are likely to be affected. Uasa will be pushing for the alternative placement of affected members at other mines in the group, while the possibility of such mitigation will only become clearer once the number of employees that accepted voluntary severance packages become known.

The decline in production at various mining houses due to a variety of factors are of great concern to all stakeholders. The sustainability of the industry is under discussion on various forums such as Midgett and the Chamber of Mines under the auspices of the Sindisa Gold Project.
