Transport Deputy Minister addresses media regarding South Africa’s bid for re-election to the United Nations’ IMO Council

The Deputy Minister of Transport, Ms Sindisiwe Chikunga will, on Friday, 24th November 2017 brief members of the media about South Africa’s plans to be re-elected to the Council of the United Nations’ (UN) specialized maritime agency, the International Maritime Organisation (IMO).

Elections for new member states will take place during the 30th Regular Session of the Assembly of the IMO in London, United Kingdom from 27th November to the 6th December 2017.

South Africa is competing alongside 25 other countries to be elected into category C of the IMO Council.

The Council, which is the Executive Organ of the IMO is responsible for supervising the work of the organization.

South Africa’s re-election to the IMO Council will ensure that the Southern African Development Community is represented in global maritime affairs and continues to advance its maritime agenda and a vision of becoming an International Maritime Centre (IMC) and strategic partner in world maritime affairs.
