Numerous academic and research institutions across Africa and abroad have recognized Professor Mafeje’s enormous contributions to concrete understandings of  socio-political, economic and ideological situations in Africa, with particular emphasis on the need for theoretical positions.

It is in this context and in the hope of preserving and carrying forward the legacy of this incredible activist and scholar that the Africa Institute of South Africa (AISA), Kara Institute and the Archie Mafeje Research Institute (AMRI) will commemorate the academic and intellectual contribution of the late Professor Archie Mafeje with the Annual Memorial Lecture.

The Annual Archie Mafeje Memorial Lecture to be held on 28 March 2014 aims to cover relevant issues affecting the practical and theoretical state of social science discipline in Africa; as well as to highlight the importance of social science research in the socio-economic and political transformation in South Africa and the rest of the African continent.

Professor Archie Mafeje distinguished himself as a leading social scientist originating from South Africa. This has been reflected through his academic publications and other scholarly contributions that remained central to intellectual discourses and socio-economic transformation.

Among a plethora of lifetime achievements, from 1969 until 1971, Mafeje was Professor of Sociology and held the position of Head of the Department of Sociology at the University of Dar es Salaam in Tanzania. Between 1972 and 1973, he held visiting positions with the Institute of Social Sciences in the Netherlands and with the University of Copenhagen in Denmark.

At the age of thirty-four, Mafeje was appointed as the Professor of Anthropology and Sociology of Development at the Institute of Social Sciences. As this appointment required the approval of universities in the Netherlands and had to be signed into proclamation by the Dutch Queen at the time (thus constituting an act of parliament), it could be said to have been a unique honour, reflective of his immense capabilities.

Following this, Professor Mafeje worked as a full-time consultant for the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations Organisation in Rome, before going on to become a Professor of Sociology at the American University in Cairo, Egypt- a position held from 1978 until 1986. In 1993, he was appointed as a Professor of Sociology and Anthropology, as well as the Director of the Multidisciplinary Research Centre at the University of Namibia.

In 2003, he became a Senior Research Fellow at the National Research Foundation (NRF). In this year he also became a member of the Scientific Committee for CODESRIA who awarded him with honorary lifetime membership. In 2005, Mafeje’s immense expertise was officially recognised by the Africa Institute of South Africa (AISA) which appointed him as a Distinguished Research Fellow. During Professor Mafeje’s lifetime, in his honour and in further recognition of the incredible value of his work, AISA also established the Archie Mafeje Fellowship Programme. Professor Mafeje passed away on 28 March 2007.

This lecture is delivered annually by a distinguished African scholar and progressive African political leader in order to further contribute to the path of intellectual freedom, social responsibility and African knowledge production that Professor Mafeje so insightfully set in motion.
