The Transport Education and Training Authority (TETA) today hosted its inaugural Career Awareness Expo at the Mahikeng Airport.  The expo saw about 2000 learners from schools in the Ngaka Modiri Molema District who attended together with their Life Orientation teachers.

The ultimate goal of this Expo was to expose various career opportunities available within the transport sector to the high school learners.  Scarce and Critical skills serve as a baseline in choosing a career in any sector and the relevant information on scarce and critical skills was presented to both the learners and the Life Orientation teachers who were accompanying the learners.  The TETA Career Awareness was targeted to learners that are currently experiencing forms of exclusion and access to information either due to their geographical location or limited resources such as internet connectivity. The female learners and learners living with disabilities were some of the main target groups to attend the career expo.

Strategically,  the expo needed to provide assistance to the grade 09 and 10 with their subject choices relevant to available careers and further assist the grade 11 and 12 with choosing their careers of choice from pool of career opportunities as presented by stakeholders such as SAA, LG SETA, EW SETA, Department of Higher Education and Training, Department of Transport, SACAA, Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati District Municipality, NYDA, Rustenburg Rapid Transport, Taletso TVET College and Phenyo E Tsile Consulting
The transport sector plays a very important role in society to stimulate economic growth and to grow and maintain scares and critical skills needed for the future.  In order to maintain the ability to be globally competitive and grow the economy, South Africa needs renewed commitment by both the private and public sectors to nurture and grow the skills of its workforce in order to foster meaningful employment in the transport sector.

“Investing knowledge and skill in the lives of our young people will surely see the country benefiting immensely from the skilled workforce.  I believe what we have done today will change a lot of these young people’s lives and their lives will never be the same again.  Skills development and training is the core of TETA’s mandate, and we have positioned ourselves as the “heart of skills innovation in the transport sector” said TETA Chief Executive Officer, Mrs. Maphefo Anno- Frempong.
Without continued investment and support in skills development and training, there can be no sustainable employment. We need to continue to grow by recognizing that we have an important role to play in the up-skilling of all South Africans.” she added.
With the North West transport infrastructure programmes such as the reconstruction and re-opening of the Mahikeng Airport and the rail passenger revitalization of the rail corridor in partnership with the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA), there are many career opportunities in the transport sector.
